The Rail Passenger Association of California and Nevada are joining others in offering condolences on the passing of Don Phillips. While I did not know Don personally, I did follow his work closely as the transportation reporter for the Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, and Trains Magazine. As a reporter Don Phillips was the subject matter expert in transportation, especially in railroading and aviation. His expertise and insight combined with his craftsmanship as a writer yielded first class reporting.
During his career he chronicled the changes brought about as a result of the deregulation of the air and railroad industries, the rise of discount air carriers, Conrail’s rebirth of Northeast railroading, Federal transportation policy, the Colonial collision at Chase Maryland and of course of ups and downs of Amtrak.
Don Phillips not only had a professional interest in transportation he was a lifelong rail enthusiast. He traveled to see the last of mainline steam and other rail operations around the globe. He authored several articles for Trains Magazine and also authored a monthly column in the magazine which generally focused on Government policy and its impact on the rail industry. He also wrote columns for Railfan & Railroad magazine and Passenger Train Journal. On behalf of the members of RailPAC, I offer condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Don Phillips.
